Meeting apps let you pick exactly one microphone, and that microphone is normally just your voice. Anything else you want the other side to hear — a track, a video, the sound of the app you are demonstrating — has to be held up to the mic or shared through a separate screen-share that often drops the audio. A virtual audio device removes that limit: you mix the sources first, and the call receives the finished mix as if it were a plain microphone.
Voice and track arrive together, at the levels you set, without the other side hearing a laptop speaker through your microphone.
System sound goes into the same feed, so a demo, a video or an alert is heard exactly as you hear it — not through the room.
Screen sharing frequently sends picture only. Route the clip's audio into the virtual device and it travels with your voice.

The driver registers itself with CoreAudio, the part of macOS every application asks for audio devices. Nothing needs to be integrated app by app: the virtual device simply appears in the microphone list beside your real one.
The installer is 37 KB. It carries an Apple Developer ID signature and has been notarised by Apple, so macOS opens it without a Gatekeeper warning.
The driver is placed in the system audio plug-in folder, /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL, which is why macOS asks. No restart into recovery mode, no security settings to weaken.
Open the audio settings of Teams, Telegram, Discord, Zoom or whatever you are calling from and choose SplitCam Virtual Audio in the microphone list. Everything mixed into it now travels down that channel.
A virtual audio device is a driver that adds an audio input to macOS which has no hardware behind it. Applications cannot tell the difference — CoreAudio hands them the same kind of device description it would for a USB microphone, so the virtual one turns up in the microphone dropdown next to your real hardware.
What makes it useful is that its input side is open. A mixer — SplitCam, for example — can pour several signals into it at once: your voice, the sound the Mac itself is playing, a music player, the audio of a clip you are showing. The application on the other end still believes it is listening to one plain microphone.
This is a CoreAudio HAL plug-in, not a kernel extension. It runs in user space, needs no reduced-security boot and can be removed by deleting a single folder.
